The best practice in dentistry is preventing oral health issues before they occur. That’s why we always recommend regular check-ups and cleanings to ensure a lifetime of beautiful teeth. Remember, great oral health isn’t a brush with luck, but in keeping a lucky brush.
Digital Dental X-Rays
Dental x-rays are a valuable preventative diagnostic tool; they reveal information that is not visible in a regular examination, such as deep tissue or root abnormalities that can help form a more accurate treatment plan.
Without this diagnostic tool some problem areas may go undetected. Digital x-rays omit a significantly lower level of radiation, are faster and much more comfortable than their analog counterparts. Although these x-rays are considered very safe we still take precautions in limiting your exposure by taking ONLY necessary x-rays and supplying you with a leaded apron. Annual x-rays are generally recommended, unless you have a dental issue which may require additional check-ups.
Fluoride is a mineral naturally present in food and water. It has been found to be the most effective agent in the prevention of tooth decay. Even though fluoride is present in food and water it may not be enough to prevent decay. Our dental professionals recommend fluoride treatments twice a year especially in children. Fluoride can be applied in two different ways topically (toothpaste, mouth rinse and gel) or systemically (tablets or drops). Not only is fluoride important for children, but in adults it can help with sensitive or exposed root surfaces, and prevent decay for those with limited saliva flow due to medications or certain medical conditions. Fluoride is not the only way to prevent tooth decay but its benefits have been known for over 50 years and greatly supported by most health organizations.
A sealant is a thin, plastic coating that is placed on the biting surface of the tooth and in the deep crevices. This is considered a preventative treatment, as up to 75% of dental decay cases (or “caries”) begin in these deep surfaces that are difficult to effectively clean with a standard toothbrush. The sealant acts to not only protect the enamel, but also create a smoother, easier to clean surface.
This procedure is generally recommended to children and teens once their permanent molars begin erupting, and to patients that have trouble with reoccurring decay. Sealants are a very simple procedure and can be completed in just a few minutes per tooth.
The surface of your tooth is first cleaned, thoroughly dried and then a special acidic solution is applied and rinsed away. Once dry, the sealant is applied to the tooth and cured with a blue spectrum (not UV) light. The surface is then checked to ensure smoothness and that the sealant has been properly applied.
Scaling & Root Planing
The objective of this preventative treatment is to remove etiologic (infectious) agents, which cause inflammation to the gum tissue and surrounding bone. Some common infectious agents that are removed are dental plaque and calculus (tartar). A registered dental hygienist generally performs this treatment at bi-annual check-ups and cleanings.
Scaling and root planning can be used both as a preventative measure and as a stand-alone treatment. This treatment may be considered necessary for disease prevention as oral bacteria can travel via your bloodstream to other parts of the body, protects your teeth by keeping the tissues supporting your teeth healthy and strong, and also improves breath. Food particles and bacteria can cause persistent foul odour in your mouth, known as “halitosis.”
Oral hygiene can greatly vary from person to person. To evaluate your gum and overall oral health, please contact us to schedule an appointment.
VELscope® is an oral screening device which uses fluorescence visualization technology. This technology is essentially a blue light that is guided around your mouth to detect any changes or lesions that would not be detected by the naked eye. Annual oral cancer screening is greatly recommended, as oral cancer kills more than testicular, ovarian and brain cancer combined each year. A VELscope® screening can be done in less than five minutes and is very affordable.
As a special promotion to new and existing patients, your first VELscope® screening is completely free. Current patients: please advise a staff member when booking if you would like a VELscope® examination.
